This week, we come to the culmination of a long season of plowing and preparation. On Sunday, January 11, the seeds of our little church plant, our “church underground,” will finally break ground as a brand new baby church.

Over the past year, God has asked us to give ourselves to many things that don’t make headlines—prayer gatherings, living-room conversations, planning meetings, quiet acts of service, faithful generosity, and simple obedience.

Much of what we’ve done has felt small. And if we’re honest, there have been moments when we’ve wondered whether these small things really mattered.

But Scripture reveals to us that God delights in the small things. He even promises that those who “despise the day of small things will rejoice.” (Zechariah 4:10)

When God’s people returned from exile in the days of Zechariah, they laid the foundation of the temple—but it looked unimpressive compared to what once stood there. Some were discouraged. Others were tempted to despise what God was doing because it didn’t look the way they expected. Into that moment, God spoke these words: “Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, says the Lord of hosts.”

God was reminding His people—and He is reminding us—that His work is never built on human strength, speed, or visibility. It is built by His Spirit through faithful obedience. Foundations are rarely exciting, but they are essential. And God takes great delight in what we are often tempted to overlook.

Zechariah prophesied that when the final stone would be set in place, the people would shout, “Grace, grace!”—a confession that everything accomplished was a gift from Him.

As we prepare to gather this Sunday for the official launch of our church, let me say this clearly: success has already been defined. God has been faithful. The Lord delights in what has been built so far.

This Sunday is not the moment everything suddenly becomes “big.” It is just another moment to acknowledge God’s grace and offer him our lives as he continues ot build his church by the power of his Spirit.

We will show up on Sunday with gratitude, humility, and joy as we build on the foundation of what God has already done.
