Are You Hungry?

The season between Thanksgiving and Christmas is marked by appropriate feasting. Christmas cookies and other baked goods seem to appear on my kitchen counter out of nowhere. Christmas parties offer a chance to enjoy the company of friends around tables where food is abundant.

If you are like me, you show up hungry but end up eating well beyond what you need to satisfy your hunger. Why? Because the food tastes so good. The turkey and dressing satisfy my hunger, but the apple pie delights my taste buds even when I’m not hungry. And no matter how much I eat the night before, I wake up the next morning hungry again.

Our physical hunger points to a greater hunger. We have a spiritual hunger that longs to be satisfied.

God welcomes spiritually hungry people. “Come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and he who has no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.” (Isaiah 55:1)

Later, Jesus said, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.” (John 6:35)

Jesus invites those who are hungry for acceptance to feast on His grace, those who are hungry for healing from woundedness to feast on his healing, and those who are hungry for purpose to feast on his mission.

Are you spiritually hungry? Jesus welcomes you to come feast on his goodness. Once you have tasted his goodness, you will find you can’t get enough. You’ll keep coming back for more of him.

O taste and see that the Lord is good! (Psalm 34:8)
