What Flavor Church?

As word begins to get out about our desire to plant New City Church in St. Johns County, it naturally draws interest from people looking for their particular flavor of church.
Some interested parties have expressed they won’t likely be involved if the church meets too far in the northern part of the county, while others are convinced the church should target the explosive growth in the north.
Some artistic folks are looking for a place where they can use their creative gifts while others are looking for a church where they can worship without the “distraction of overproduced creative elements”.
Some have told me they would like a church with a vibrant Singles ministry, while others are convinced the greatness need in the church is ministries that target marriage and families.
Some well-meaning culture warriors have quizzed me on how engaged the church will be in addressing cultural and political issues, while others are looking for a church that just teaches the Bible.
By now, I have probably offended or at least confused everyone on this distribution list. I get it. Everyone has preferences and most mature Christians have deep convictions about how churches ought to be led. Often those most interested in new churches have left churches with whom they weren’t aligned. Church planting pastors aren’t surprised when prospective members bring their agendas. I know – I am bringing my own.
So what kind of church will New City Church be? Answer: The kind of church that confronts our personal preferences and challenges all of us to give up our agendas in favor of Jesus who “gave himself up” for the church. (Ephephians 5:25)
New City Church won’t appeal to everyone. It may not be the right church for you. But if you are looking for a church where the agenda is the unashamed worship of Jesus, the unapologetic proclamation of his word, unceasing prayer as an absolute necessity, and an unafraid offer of good news that brings the power of salvation for all who will believe – well – I think you will fit just fine at New City Church.
